History: Starting her career as a costume designer, Kawakubo developed Comme des Garçons (French for “like the boys”) as a denim-heavy brand before launching menswear in 1978 and debuting her all-black, “anti-fashion” designs in Paris in 1981. Since then, she’s come to embrace a range of bold patterns, colors, and constructions (think tailored glen plaid jackets with silk ties sewn to the front), especially through her collaborations with Junya Watanabe.
